I had just picked Makaela up from school and we were heading into Boulder, she was in the back seat (which makes me think she was probably 8 years old and our relationship was less than a year in). Maroon 5 came on the radio and she asks me from the back seat if I knew that Adam Levine was getting married, and I responded with "I know, it's such a bummer, because he's so hot". She responds with "Jessica! How can you say that when you're with my dad?". I then had to go into the politically correct explanation of how even when you're in love with someone you can still appreciate the beauty and attractiveness of someone else and that it doesn't mean you love your person any less. To which she follows up with "Okay then, if you had to choose between Adam Levine and Daddy who would you choose?"(and after crossing my fingers) replied with "Your daddy of course!".
So, later on when Jason gets home from work I share the story with him (when Makaela was not present) because I thought it was so sweet for her to stand up for her dad like she did. Later that evening when Jason was in saying good night to Makaela he casually mentioned "So, I hear Adam Levine is getting married?" and she just responded with "Yep, good night Daddy". So even though she protected her dad in our conversation she then proceeded to protect me and our girl conversation later with her dad, which I took as a silent victory. I wasn't officially her stepmom at this point but found this to be a big step in my relationship with her.
