What I Pack in my Carry On - Domestic Flights

Updated: Apr 2, 2019

We love to travel and through trial and error I’ve discovered the items that I want to have with me on every flight and am happy to share these recommendations with all of you.

Here is the list with some links/suggestions on where you can find everything:

1. First, you need a light-weight bag to lug through the airport. My favorite bag is my Longchamp Large Le Pliage Tote, in Black. Black because it hides stains really well. I’ve had mine for years and it’s my go to for weekends and for all travel. https://shop.nordstrom.com/s/longchamp-large-le-pliage-tote/3241956?origin=keywordsearch-personalizedsort&breadcrumb=Home%2FAll%20Results&color=black

2. Entertainment via an iPad or book. I like to travel with my iPad and download a book on kindle and read via the kindle app vs. lugging around a physical book, but also understand some people prefer a physical book. (Don’t forget to pack a charger for your device in your regular suitcase.)

3. Headphones. I really like Apple’s airpods. They have great sound and travel well with their own case. Just don’t forget to charge them before you leave. https://www.apple.com/shop/product/MV7N2/airpods-with-charging-case

5. Hand lotion. My absolute favorite is Loccitane’s hand lotion. Make sure and get the travel size so TSA doesn't get a $40 tube of hand lotion on your dime - believe me, I know from experience! They will take it even if it's half gone, if it's in the large tube. https://shop.nordstrom.com/s/loccitane-shea-butter-hand-cream/2885807?origin=keywordsearch-personalizedsort&breadcrumb=Home%2FAll%20Results&color=none

6. Notebook / pen. I love the thin, lined moleskin notebooks for travel. https://www.amazon.com/dp/8883704959/ref=twister_B07H9KZL7W?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

7. Wallet. One thing I’ve done is copy my license, insurance cards, as well as the front and back of all credit cards that are in my wallet and have them saved in Dropbox, but you could save to google docs or any other storage you could access easily via an app on your phone or computer. You will be thankful you did this if your wallet is ever lost or stolen.

8. Lip gloss, lipstick and chapstick. I am in love with Chanel’s long wearing lipstick that comes with a gloss. It lasts so you don’t have to continually reapply and is also moisturizing which can be challenging with long-wear lipstick, and I love having a gloss option and always have a chapstick, because I need some soft lips for kissing my handsome hubby on vacation! https://shop.nordstrom.com/s/chanel-le-rouge-duo-ultra-tenue-ultra-wear-lip-colour/5022647?origin=keywordsearch-personalizedsort&breadcrumb=Home%2FAll%20Results&color=397%20merry%20rose

9. Travel pack of Kleenix. I buy the multi-packs, typically in the travel size section at Target, so they are easy to grab when we are ready to leave on a flight. They have come in very handy, not just for myself but for my husband and daughter as well.

10. Clorox wipes, individually wrapped, to wipe down tray table, hands, etc. I typically throw 4 in my carry on and then a few more in my suitcase for the trip home. You can find these in packs of 24 by the paper plate section at Target.

11. Blanket/scarf. Planes are so hard to plan for, not knowing if it’ll be warm or cold, so I like to pack something to wrap around my shoulders just in case it’s chilly.

12. Gum/mints/ snacks. I carry around snacks with me all the time, so that I can have a healthy snack vs. spending money on something that isn’t as healthy. My new favorite is the Mini Cliff Bars, they are 100 calories and have enough protein to keep me full for quite a while. There are a lot of good options out there, just find something you like and throw it in your bag.

13. Face powder. I find that my face gets oily either walking through the airport or just on the plane and feel better if I can touch up my face before landing.

14. Glasses (prescription / sunglasses). I like to have my sunglasses in my carry on so that when you get into the cab or rental car you’ve got your sunglasses at your fingertips.

15. Phone plug and charging cord. I will typically take some time to plug in my phone at the airport to charge it before the flight, so I have enough juice to be able to get directions or anything else off my phone that I need when I land.

16. Water bottle. I carry one with me everywhere, so flying wouldn’t be any different. I always fill up my water bottle before the flight so I have water to keep me hydrated while on the plane. This is also great to have for when you get to where you’re going so that you can carry it with you while you’re walking around. I prefer this CamelBack water bottle because it’s lightweight and has a locking feature on top so you can throw it in your bag and not worry about it leaking. https://www.amazon.com/CamelBak-Podium-Chill-Insulated-Bottle/dp/B015DJDLLM/ref=sr_1_3?crid=Y9N5USQP8SCH&keywords=camelback+water+bottle+25oz&qid=1554055854&s=sporting-goods&sprefix=camelback+water+bottles%2Csporting%2C238&sr=1-3

17. Socks. Inevitably the plane will always be cold when I board wearing sandals or shoes without socks, so I bring a pair to put in for those times to keep my feet from freezing.

18. Small bag to hold misc. items in travel bag (makeup, wipes, face powder, wipes, etc).

19. Perfume. This may seem like a silly addition as you're not likely to put perfume on while on the plane, at least not without getting the evil eye from everyone around you, but it could come in handy, say, if you have to go to the bathroom and would like it to smell pleasant when you leave for the next person. This is as easy as going to your favorite department store and asking for them to make you a sample of your favorite perfume, or any perfume, for that matter. Food for thought.

20. Nuun, immunity tablets. There are so many germs on planes and just everywhere, especially when you're traveling so I bring these along to help fight germs to try to keep us healthy on our travels. You just drop them in your water and they are delicious! https://www.amazon.com/Nuun-Immunity-Electrolytes-Anti-Inflammatory-Antioxidant/dp/B07CB5MSL4/ref=sr_1_8?keywords=nuun&qid=1554247733&s=gateway&sr=8-8&th=1

All of this seems like a lot but it’s really not that bad, and light weight, and you could possibly need.

If there is something that you always have in your carry on that you’d like to share with me please send me a note, I always love suggestions for making travel a little easier.

Safe travels to you and yours!
